Balmoral Island is named after the Earl of Balmoral, who purchased it in 1853. The island was used as a hunting retreat for the Earl and his guests. In the 1880s, it became a vacation spot for him and his family.
In 1905, William Jennings Bryan bought Balmoral from John Campbell Hamilton-Gordon–the 5th Earl who had inherited it from his father–and made extensive improvements to its buildings before selling it again two years later.
